Like other Advanced Technology Facilities, laboratories and research and development centers -- such as biotechnology, pharmaceutical, university, and particle physics facilities -- typically house tools which perform on sub-micron and nanometer scales.

In addition to the installations of commercially-available equipment (with sensitivities of their own), many of the tools employed in these centers are one-of-a-kind, designed and built by the researchers who use them.  These researchers often require some assistance in assessing the structural dynamics of their tools and making measurements of their tools' dynamic performance.
